Using the Pollaczek-Khinchine Formula for Delay Analysis in Multiservice Networks with Bursty and Self-Similar Traffic

This paper proposes a methodology for determining an equivalent latency parameter in a deterministic rate-latency service curve based on the stationary characteristics of the M/G/1 queuing system. It is shown that accounting for the coefficient of variation of service time and the Hurst parameter through the Pollaczek-Khinchine formula yields less conservative yet still reliable end-to-end delay bounds in multiservice networks subject to bursty and self-similar traffic. The synthesis of Deterministic Network Calculus and classical queueing theory provides a trade-off between deterministic worst-case delay guarantees and the stochastic nature of processes observed in real packet-switched networks.
